Apparently I need to add some videos or something, so I was debating adding a video of a pallet wood sign today. The comment was never actually posted under "How to Age Books" so I searched for the blog, and it wasn't there. Has anyone else gotten email like this? So any way I guess the blog won't have "pop" anytime soon.
On our way home from my Grandma's house, we spotted some old shelving in someone's trash in need of a home, and my mom couldn't resist. Even though the people inside the house were peeking out the widows the whole time. We cut the wood up and made chalkboards, so they were basically free, except for the paint.
I really liked this saying!
This is one of my mom's favorite Psalms (139).
Any one have any tips on selling at craft shows? This is my first one and any advice would be greatly appreciated! Just no weird ones please.
I did all the small pallet signs free-hand, because I am too lazy to make some stencils.
I saw a dandelion vinyl decal somewhere on Google images and I turned it into an idea for a pallet sign. I did the drawing first in sharpie and then painted over it. If you want to see other pallet art check out these posts here and here in actual rooms.

This is my favorite pallet sign so far. We got the idea from La Famille. I also found another copycat sign at The Winthrop Chronicles. I hope these signs are an inspiration! If you would like to see a tutorial on how I made a sign check it out here.

You're an artist'! Lovely work. Do you have a smart phone? How about a Square? Those are little credit card processors that allow you to accept credit cards and they only charge 2.75%. No monthly fee. You're only charged when you use it. Great to have for those without cash!

With regards to your "anonymous" comment....I've had several similar ones, they don't make sense and there's never a blog to see when I try. I'm pretty sure they're SPAM of some sort and I mark them that way so they stop coming. Good luck with your craft show :)

ReplyDeleteThank you! The cursive and the writing on the smaller signs are all done freehand. Until I find a better way of painting them, that's what I'll stick with!

ReplyDeleteNice and simple, a look that is very popular right now. I have done lots of craft shows over the years and in 2012 I sold a lot of signs somewhat similar to yours. Somekey things to remember ......presentation in your show space is critical!!! You will need to display your items in a way shopper's can visualize them in their own home. This can be a challenge with large items like signs in a 10x10 craft booth! Pricing is the other key; your product has to be priced to make it affordable for the shopper and profitable for you. As you do more craft shows you will learn from your experience. And remember, what sells at one show could potentially be a dud at the next but don't let that be discouraging. I like to visit a show as a shopper first and quiz the vendors before I sign up to be one myself. Word of mouth from other crafters is invaluable, we are like a "secret society" and most of us want to help each other have a successful show. I've wasted a lot of money on shows that I thought were going to be fantastic & they were a huge flop. Find out how many spaces the sponsor has for the show, how large each space is and what kind of advertising will be done to promote the show. Shows with more than 50 vendors can be overwhelming to shoppers so I try & stick to mostly smaller private shows. I never do shows that are put on by the mega-promoters that go all over the country. I also will never do a show in a shopping mall, they are almost always a dud. Remember to bring lots of business cards, as a matter of fact I use my business card as a price tag and leave it on the product for the customer. One last thing, spring & summer shows are typically not the best. I have my best shows in Sept through Dec, people are in the buying mood for themselves and for holiday gifts. Everything I've said her is strictly my opinion and what has worked for me here in the Midwest. I'm not sure where you live so you may have a completely different experience. ReplyDeleteI want to do a sign like your "Market" or "artfully and wonderfully made" sign. How did you do it? Like how did you get the hand with the pointing finger and how specifically did you get the letters to look so neat? Did you just freehand everything? If so, I'm going to be pretty disappointed. My handwriting isn't that neat with a paintbrush.
ReplyDeleteSorry to disappoint you I did it freehand, but you could always make your own stencil. I have a tutorial on how I make pallet wood signs. For the hand On the MARKET sign I taped tissue paper to regular copy paper and ran it through my printer,then used Mod Podge to stick it on.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the tutorial! I "love" your LOVE sign. Since that one is white washed, would you just cut out the letters and paint around them (instead of using an XACTO knife)? Also, can you tell me what font you used for the LOVE sign? One last question, did you stain the LOVE sign before you white washed it? What technique did you use to white wash it?
ReplyDeleteFor the LOVE sign I cut out the letters (don't remember the font) and used double sided tape to keep the letters down, then gave it a light brushing of white paint over the whole board (for this I just used a dry brush, dipped the tip of brush in paint and dragged it across the wood (no stain) . When you remove the letters you're left with wood for the letters. Hope this helps.

I have actually used pallets for some signs as it has the weathered look when I run out of barn wood. I would love to read your tutorial...can you tell me where I can get it?
