Making a Pallet Wood Sign

I guess spring is on it's way! There have been huge flocks of robins everywhere. I have never seen so many in my life. The other day I noticed that some of our little daffodils have bloomed. Everything will soon be GREEN! Spring  is such a beautiful time of the year!

I know it's been a little while since you guys asked us to make a tutorial on how to make a pallet wood sign. I've finally got around to it! With family, and other activities keeping us busy, we've gotten ourselves motivated again and got working on the tutorial.

BElive THEre is GOOD in the world!

Ok, so first off I started by taking a pallet wood apart. Then I arranged the pieces. The more the pieces you add, the larger the sign will be.

I added pieces of pallet wood to the back so it will keep them together.

Depending on how strong and heavy the wood, you will need to add more support in the back. This one is already stained, but you get the idea.

Here you can see the support on the back.

After the whole pallet wood sign was put together, I grinded/sanded the wood till it was smooth.

When the sanding is done, you need to add a coat of wood stain. I used Minwax Dark Walnut. After brushing the stain on the wood, go back and wipe it off with a rag.

While the stain dries, you can get your stencils ready so you can paint the letters on.

To paint the words on to the wood, I printed out letter with the font, and font size that I wanted in Microsoft Word. Then I cut each letter out with an X-ACTO knife.(Sorry about the crumpled paper, one of the kids got a hold of it.)

Take the letter in black and use it to get an idea of were you want to put it, and to space out the letters correctly.

You can then put the white paper down and use it like a stencil. From my experience this way turns out a little bit blotchier . The paint might go under the stencil. If you decide you want a different way of painting the letters we have one coming up.

The other method is this: You place the stencil over the cut out letters, and remove the black letter. After that trace the empty letter onto the wood, remove the paper, and paint the outline.

This is what your outline should look like. You will simply paint the letter in using a small brush.

This is the finally product. If you mess up a little, or get a small smudge somewhere on the wood, you can fix it by taking an X-ACTO knife and scraping it a little, and then just dab some stain on it if there is a noticable difference in that place.

There are many ways to paint the letters on, and these are just two of them. When it was finished, the pallet wood sign need just a little something, so we made a washi tape banner for it by folding pieces of tape over a piece of twine. Then we simply cut triangles in the center of each tape piece to give it a banner look. If you'd like some more inspiration, you can check out our other pallet wood signs here. With a little bit of motivation, you can have it done in no time!

  4. I found an easy way to transfer letters without having to cut them out. Use tracing paper for sewing. It usually comes in a color variety pack and you choose a light or dark color depending on the wood. Just trace over the letters, then paint.

    Love your sight.

  10. Thank you for the tutorial! I "love" your LOVE sign. Since that one is white washed, would you just cut out the letters and paint around them (instead of using an XACTO knife)? Also, can you tell me what font you used for the LOVE sign? One last question, did you stain the LOVE sign before you white washed it?
