How to Paint a Rocking Chair

On one of our trips to Goodwill, we found an old rocking chair that was really cute, but it was $35 and my mom didn't know if she wanted to spend that much. We asked about it and it just so happened to be on sale for $17.00. So of course she bought it. It has been sitting in our basement for about a month because we didn't know what to do with it. The wood was really scuffed up, so we didn't want to leave it. Then, we couldn't figure out a good color. We finally decided on a charcoal gray from Sherwin Williams called Seal Skin. The paint only cost us $6.00 because it was a sample quart.

We wrapped the upholstery in paper and taped it up so that the fabric wouldn't get ruined with paint. You'll get something like this.We sanded it down a little so that the paint would stick better.

All you do then is paint it with your choice of primer (one coat) and paint (two coats). And then you wait for it to dry...

Right after it was done drying, about 20 minutes after the last coat of paint, we distress the arms and legs of the chair.

I'd have to say that was a pretty good deal. We decided to put it in the corner of our dining room, by the window. You can see the rest of our dining room here.

 I think one of the previous owners re upholstered this chair's fabric because of the way it looks underneath, but I really like the color they chose, so it's all good.

The total cost of this project was $23. All we paid for was the chair itself and the paint. So, if you know how to paint, and you have a piece of furniture that could use a coat of paint, I say go for it! And if you don't like it, you could always paint it a different color. What do you have to lose?
