Pallet Wood Doll Bed

For Christmas, we made a pallet wood doll bed for my little sisters. they love playing with baby dolls, our kitchen set complete with plastic food and appliances. The only thing they didn't have was a doll bed. We saw a bed at Wal-Mart, but it was cheap, plastic, and hot pink. So, the great doll bed conspiracy was born. Actually, the bed and blankets, pillows, and mattress were made while the girls were standing right there... but they didn't catch on about what it was or what it's for, probably because we are always working on something. Hence, the bed is still a surprise.

I don't have step by step instructions for how to make the bed because that is really up to you. But I can show you what ours turned out like and tell you what we did.

We started out with some pallet wood. The easiest way to cut a pallet is with a Sawzall.

We ended up with this!

First, I put together the two boards where the mattress would sit. Then, I put the legs on from the top. If you don't have blocks like we did, you can screw together a stack of four squares of pallet wood (bottom left leg). Then I made the headboard and foot board with three pieces of pallet wood each. I also put the white boards to strengthen it. The bed is strong enough for the kids to sit on, which they probably will do.

Before we screwed on the side boards, we made a mattress pad out of an old crib bumper and some old fabric. Then we screwed the edges of the mattress underneath the side boards of the bed.

The bed we made fits perfectly for an American Girl doll. Our bed is about 20 inches long. The quilt is two pieces of a crib bumper pad sewn together down the middle.

The side boards were added to hide the legs and the mattress.

We made a mattress, a quilt, a pillow, a sham, and an extra smaller blanket. It only took a few hours to make the bed and the bedding. And it was F-R-E-E!

Isn't it so cute! I would have loved it as a kid!

  1. I love reading your blog and seeing what you have up your sleeve :) Your sisters are blessed to have you as an older sister!!! I would have loved a bed like this one as a little girl, but alas, my older sister didn't have the tools at the time ;)

  2. To get the best out of your chosen mattress try a mattress protector. They're available in anti-allergy or waterproof styles, and are machine-washable. Mattress toppers add a luxurious extra layer to your mattress. They provide extra support and comfort and will generally provide a cosier feel to your bed.
