Shabby Chic Desk Makeover

I just wanted to show you what we've been up to lately. I bought this desk at a resale shop last week and I worked on it for the last few days. With just a few coats of paint we gave it a whole new look.

I know what you're thinking. It's pretty bad, right? As you guys know, I could never pass up a "perfectly" good desk like this! It took a lot of sanding but I finally got it to the point at which I could paint it.

 I started out painting the desk with white primer. After that I painted it a flat dark gray mis-tint paint we bought from Sherwin-Williams.

Then, I distressed it to let the white show through and to give the desk a shabby chic French cottage look. Since the paint was flat, I had to give it two coats of poly-acrylic.

 I also painted the original handles white and distressed those as well, because the white was way to bright on its own.

 We found some scrap-booking paper at Michael's, 40% off. The paper was perfect to line the desk drawers in. I just cut the paper to the right size, Mod Podged it in, and then painted a second layer of glue on top. We only put paper in the top drawers.

As of now I'm working on fixing up a few more pieces of furniture, so we'll be posting on those soon!

  2. That dark gray was the perfect color for this style desk - love the way you painted and distressed the handles to contrast with the dark gray.

  3. Found you while partying at Too Much Time On My Hands....I love this desk style. The distressed black paint is totally awesome. I recently did a dresser in a similar way and it's my favorite piece in my house.

    Thanks for sharing! And I'm your newest follower :)

  6. Your desk looks really nice. Love the dark grey color. I found an old roll top desk at a garage sale last summer for $10 couldn't past it up. Only thing wrong was the bottom trim piece on the front was broke. But just replaced both sides to match. I'm in the process of painting, just moving little slow because I haven't made up my mind what I'm going to do with it when I finish. I already have a desk. But yet always wanted a roll top. Hmm what to do (-;
